The Brooklyn Nets’ 2022–23 season got off to a poor start when they fell to the New Orleans Pelicans, 130–108. Ben Simmons made his Nets debut in the contest; it was the first time he had played in well over a year. But it was clear that Simmons’ Nets debut was far from great.
Simmons barely played for 23 minutes before fouling out in the middle of the third quarter. He finished the game with just four points, five rebounds, and five assists. Simmons was left seeking for explanations for his subpar performance, eventually blaming it on being overly eager to make his court comeback. Simmons’ terrible performance undoubtedly infuriated Nets fans.
“There was so much going on; to be honest, I think I was simply too enthusiastic. But being outside was just wonderful. Naturally, you want to win your first game, but we are aware of why we fell short. We lost for several reasons, all of which we can correct. We are aware that’s not how our team works. It was beneficial to get that one out of the way because I believe there are a lot of jitters out there right now. – ESPN’s Ben Simmons
Given that he hadn’t participated in an NBA game for more than a year, Simmons’ explanation may have some merit. However, he fouled out absurdly early and didn’t really contribute while he was on the court. Although he had some strong moments, Kevin Durant was really the only player who participated in Brooklyn’s season opener.
It was undoubtedly not the season-opening performance the Nets were hoping for, and much of that is Simmons’ fault. In order to avoid things getting worse before they get better for Brooklyn, he will be aiming to put together some stronger performances in the future.
