On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers managed to hold off their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers. But in the end, it was the Clippers who triumphed 103-97 in the Crypto.com Arena.
For the Lakers, Russell Westbrook got the opening tip-off, but to say that he had another forgettable game would be a major understatement. This is especially true when you consider that he had a negative shooting night, going 0-of-11. NBA Twitter appears to concur:
Westbrook really 0-11 tonight 0-6 from downtown with two points.. come on Lakers it s time to make some calls pic.twitter.com/1bokQmJOCV

Russell Westbrook missed all 11 of his field goal attempts tonight, the fourth time he’s failed to make a field goal in his career and first since going 0-for-3 in 2016 against Dallas (was ejected in the second quarter). pic.twitter.com/TeF8n9coXS

That’s harsh. On the other hand, you can’t say that Russ didn’t deserve it after that terrible showing in this dramatic Lakers loss.
For what it’s worth, Westbrook was actually quite effective in this game on defence. In an otherwise uninteresting evening, that appeared to be the only positive aspect for him:

1. LeBron James looks like LeBron James.
2. These players play hard for Darvin Ham.
3. Russell Westbrook played a great defensive fourth quarter.
All three of these things matter more than the outcome. There were a lot of positives tonight.

But as the tweet mentioned above pointed out, things weren’t all bad for Westbrook and the Lakers. His defensive effort was admirable, but in reality, it was easily overshadowed by his offensive flaws.
In this game, the Lakers gave a commendable effort, which, if you think about it, was also true of their opening-night loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers kept the game tight all night long on Thursday, and they didn’t give up when the Clippers hit them with their biggest haymaker.
Despite all, the Lakers’ grim reality is that they are currently 0-2 and that things might get much worse given their remaining schedule.
