If you haven’t already heard, let me tell you: Russell Westbrook of the Los Angeles Lakers had a terrible shooting game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night, making 0 of 11 shots from the field. What you probably haven’t heard is that, in spite of his offensive struggles, he also played some really good defence that night.
When asked to evaluate his own performance versus their cross-town rivals, this was the exact point that Russ wished to make. Westbrook thinks it’s commendable that he worked his butt off on Thursday night (h/t ClutchPoint on Twitter):
“Solid, solid,” he said. “Played hard. That’s all you can ask for.”
Reporter: How about you personally, how would you assess your game tonight?
Russ: Solid. Solid. Played hard that s all you can ask for. pic.twitter.com/dUMgVuxnuA

Russell Westbrook was a lost cause on offense in the ‘Battle of LA’. On the bright side, he did have some good defensive moments with the energy he brought on that end. pic.twitter.com/18ZohlVmgG

To be fair to Russ, he is correct in this case. He was the Lakers’ defensive standout, especially in the fourth quarter when they kept the Clippers at bay until the final buzzer. In 27 minutes of play, Westbrook not only had one turnover but also five thefts for the night.
Whatever the case, it’s not unexpected that his offensively disastrous performance will dominate the headlines. Russ was able to score two points from the line, but as we are all aware at this point, the beleaguered Lakers star missed all 11 of his shots that night, including six efforts from beyond the arc.
It’s wonderful to see Russ giving it his all on defence, and you can’t knock him for trying. He simply cannot be this offensively poor, though.
