After the San Francisco 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers in a trade, head coach Kyle Shanahan cracked all the jokes.
Recall that the 2017 NFL Draft offered the 49ers and Shanahan, their head coach at the time, the potential to select McCaffrey. They possessed the third overall pick at the time, but they chose Solomon Thomas, a teammate of McCaffrey’s from Stanford, instead. The Panthers selected the outstanding running back with the eighth overall pick.
In retrospect, the Niners ought to have simply selected McCaffrey. In the end, they would have saved a significant amount of draught capital. San Francisco sent four picks to Carolina in exchange for the six-year veteran (2023 second, 2023 third, 2023 fourth, 2024 fifth round pick).
But Shanahan has a pretty amusing justification for ignoring McCaffrey at the time. They projected to make a run for him more than five years later, so he jokingly said that it was always their plan.
“I told Christian that this was always the plan. According to David Lombardi of The Athletic, Kyle Shanahan stated, “We wanted to establish a D-line first and then add him five and a half years later.
Putting jokes aside, the 49ers definitely did a good job at developing their defence. This 2022 season, they have one of the strongest defences in the NFL, which has made it possible for them to contend for the NFC West’s top slot.
The Niners are unquestionably looking like Super Bowl candidates because to an enhanced defence and a boosted offence powered by Christian McCaffrey. Whether or whether it was planned half a decade ago doesn’t matter; what matters is that the squad appears to be prepared to go all-out.
Kyle Shanahan’s hilarious 5-year Christian McCaffrey plan is exposed in the article “This was our plan all along,” which first appeared on ClutchPoints.
